Virginia Festival of the Book

In March, Ash Lawn-Highland partners with the Virginia Festival of the Book in an ever-popular annual book talk on a subject relating to James Monroe and his long career in public service.

James Monroe 5K

Part of the American Heritage race series presented by Notus Sports, the annual James Monroe 5K offers a cross country race which winds around and through our fifth president’s property—rolling hills, pastures and woodland. Registration for the 5K includes admission for one on a guided tour of Monroe’s historic home. Race proceeds benefit Ash Lawn-Highland.

Independence Day Celebrations

Join us on this day of national importance with an afternoon celebration at the home of a Revolutionary war veteran. Holiday-specific interpretive activities, children’s games and crafts, and patriotic music. Picnics welcome and encouraged.

Artisan Open House

In October, through a partnership with the Artisans’ Center of Virginia, Ash Lawn-Highland celebrates the juried Virginia artists and artisans whose wares are featured in the Museum Shop Artisans’ Room. Handmade items include objects in wood, metal, glass, textile, and ceramic. Visitors can see meet with artisans, see demonstrations of their work, and try samples of artisanal foods.

Veterans Day

Honor U.S. veterans at the home of James Monroe, one of two U.S. presidents to fight in the American Revolution, with commemorative events at Ash Lawn-Highland. All active duty, former, or retired military personnel receive free admission.

Holidays at Ash Lawn-Highland

During the month of December Monroe’s home, which he called Highland, is decorated for the holidays. See the charming house interiors on a guided tour and enjoy greenery and botanical arrangements that highlight the carefully restored historic home.

Albemarle County Fair

Each year Ash Lawn-Highland hosts the Albemarle County Fair, a three-day agricultural event, offering farm animals, home arts, local produce, live music, children’s rides, and exhibits bringing traditional family fun in a historic setting.

Annual Sheep Shearing

Don’t miss Ash Lawn-Highland’s sheep shearing event each April! Watch as sheep don their new spring coats, visit with baby lambs, try your hand at wool carding and spinning, and learn about natural dyes from the Monroe era, embroidery, needlework, and more.
